Beef cattle

A main focus of the farm is the production of beef, which is sold through the Organic Livestock Marketing Co-operative, who work to achieve the best price for our animals. The cattle are taken through to slaughter at approximately 22 months of age. They will have spent their lives grazing a mixture of permanent pasture, legume and herb rich leys, with some additional home-grown oats or barley to assist with the finishing process.

As our beef is sold by a third party, it has the potential to reach a wide range of locations but most often it can often be found on the shelves of Sainsbury’s and M&S.

Arable Crops

The best oats are sold through Organic Arable to White’s Oats to become porridge and can be found on the shelves of Waitrose. The remainder of the oats, along with some other cereals harvested on the farm, are fed to the cattle in the winter.

The farm is busy year-round. Cattle are calving in spring and early summer to make the most of the grass growth and to produce ample milk for their growing calves. The animals are housed in barns in the winter months, to prevent the grassland being poached and turned to mud in wetter winter months.

Hay and silage are made in the summer when the weather is fine. This is then baled and wrapped to preserve the grass for feeding in the winter months. Crops are sown in autumn and spring and harvested in late summer.
